A Third of U.S. Children Exposed to Lead Are Likely Undiagnosed

Study by the Public Health Institute (PHI), published in Pediatrics, suggests that current lead reporting may be capturing just two out of every three children poisoned by lead. From PHI’s California Environmental Health Tracking Program, "Assessing Child Lead Poisoning Case Ascertainment in the US, 1999-2010," discovered states in which more than 80% of children with lead poisoning were unidentified and researchers suspect that testing rates have declined in subsequent years as well.

Sesame Street and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) have teamed up to teach children in Latin America and the Caribbean Islands how to avoiding contracting Zika virus. They have created two, thirty-second videos in Spanish, English, and Portuguese where Raya and Elmo discuss more effective ways to ward off mosquitoes than by using fly swatters. Sesame Street also created three printables as reminders to children to post around the house.

The final message displayed in posters and videos is “If the mosquito doesn’t bite, goodbye Zika!”

Enhanced Epilepsy Surveillance and Awareness Encouraged in the Age of Zika

An article from JAMA Neurology, examines recent studies indicating that epilepsy and seizures have been reported in some infants with congenital Zika virus infection. Seizure symptoms are difficult to recognize in infants and young children, leading to the misdiagnosis or underreporting of cases of Zika virus-associated epilepsy.
