APHA: Protect Maternal, Child, and Family Health: Resist Cuts in Medicaid and Rollback of the Affordable Care Act

The American Public Health Association and other leading public health, medical, provider and disease advocacy organizations strongly oppose legislation that would weaken or eliminate key components of the Affordable Care Act and the nation’s social investment in health coverage and care. The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Section of APHA calls on the MCH community to reach out to members of Congress, colleagues, family, and friends to educate them about the negative impacts these proposals will have on women, children, and families across the nation.

TimeMagazine: Most Overweight Kids Don’t Think They’re Overweight, a New Study Finds

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHNES). According to the survey data, about 81% of overweight boys and 71% of overweight girls believe they are approximately the right weight. The survey found that about 30% of children and adolescents perceive their weight status incorrectly which amounts to about nine million young people.

Difficulties are discouraging to many new mothers, but they should be encouraged to seek council from a professional so their baby can get the health benefits of breast milk.

Study suggests depression as risk factor for heart disease in young women

A recent study by the Journal of the American Heart Association suggests that young women with depression are twice as likely to have a heart attack of supper from heart disease than their counterparts. Researchers examined over 3000 patients with suspected or established heart disease who were undergoing coronary angiography and conducted a mental health assessment the same day.
