Funding Opportunity: Grant Proposals That Evaluate Mobile Apps to Promote Healthy Choices

The Aetna Foundation has released a Request for Proposals, "Community Empowerment through Technological Innovations: MOBILE-izing for Health and Wellness," which seeks sustainable projects that can demonstrate scalability of effective strategies to improve community health outcomes and have the potential for positive societal impact. Apps must include available evidence such as population health data or health care data, be built upon a strong foundation of behavioral or applicable theory, and be grounded in policy. The deadline for submissions is July 15, 2013.

MentalHealth.gov Website Launches

The Department of Health and Human Services has launched a new website, Mentalheath.gov, which serves as an online resource for people looking for information about signs of mental health problems, how individuals can seek help, and how communities can host conversations on mental health. It also includes a "Toolkit for Community Conversation About Mental Health," which helps communities host their own conversations on the subject.

Report: Pregnant Women At Risk from Listeria Food Poisoning

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released a "Vital Signs: Listeria Illnesses, Deaths, and Outbreaks -- United States, 2009-2011." Listeria can cause serious infection in certain vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, resulting in higher rates of hospitalization and death than most other bacteria commonly spread by contaminated food. The Vital Signs report outlines the key groups impacted by Listera poisoning, and highlights the importance of safety measures to prevent contamination.

Report: The Truth About the Prevention Fund

The Trust for America's Health has released a new report, "The Truth About the Prevention Fund," which examines the impact of the Prevention and Public Health Fund, the largest-ever U.S. investment in prevention, enacted by the passing of the Affordable Care Act in 2010. The TFAH report indicates that its current budget -- $14.5 billion over the next 10 years -- can provide a substantial return on investment to improve the public's health and prevent chronic illnesses.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released a Funding Opportunity Announcement for Round Two of the Health Care Innovation Awards. CMS will spend up to $1 billion for awards and evaluation of projects that test new payment and service delivery models that will deliver better care and lower costs for Medicare, Medicaid, and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) enrollees. Letters of intent are due by June 28, 2013, and applications will be accepted until August 15, 2013.
