CityMatCH Summer 2013 Externship Opportunities

CityMatCH and the University of Nebraska Medical Center are pleased to offer one or two externship opportunities to MSPH students at Meharry Medical College during the summer of 2013. This 10-week externship will take place in Omaha, Nebraska where students will have an unparalleled opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in maternal and child health.

Call for MCH PHLI Applications for Class of 2013-2014

The Maternal and Child Health-Public Health Leadership Institute (MCH PHLI) applications are being accepted through February 1st, 2013. This year-long leadership development program is designed to significantly expand self-awareness and quickly build practical skills for effectively leading and managing people and building partnerships. All tuition and lodging charges for this program are grant-supported. There are no on-site charges, and partial travel scholarships will be available.

Video Commentary: Alcohol and Women: How to Screen and Intervene

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) has developed a CDC Expert Commentary as part of a collaboration between CDC and Medscape. The video, "Alcohol and Women: How to Screen and Intervene" provides guidance to clinicians on how they can identify women who drink at risky levels, encourage healthy behaviors through brief intervention and education, and refer patients who are alcohol dependent for professional treatment.

Rhode Island Department of Health Seeks Healthy Housing Volunteers

The Rhode Island Department of Health is looking for volunteers to participate in the Healthy Housing Collaborative's Healthy Housing Trainings Committee. The Committee will coordinate trainings that will educate others about the RI Data hub, how to use the hub, and how data can be moved to action. Interested volunteers should join the next committee meeting on Wed, February 13 at 10 am, Room 209 of the second floor of the RI Department of Health.

Progress in Immunization Information Systems--United States, 2011

The National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released 2011 data on child participation in Immunization Information Systems (IIS), participation defined as having two or more vaccinations documented in an IIS. Nationally, 19.2 million U.S. children aged <6 years (84%) participated in an IIS in 2011. Child participation in IIS increased steadily from 63% in 2006 to 84% in 2011.

The American Lung Association has released a new report, State of Tobacco Control 2013, which tracks progress on key tobacco control policies at the state and federal levels, and assigns grades based on tobacco control laws and regulations in effect as of January 2, 2013.

Report: Prescription Drug Abuse in Los Angeles County: Background and Recommendations for Action

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has released a report, "Prescription Drug Abuse in Los Angeles County: Background and Recommendations for Action," after prescription drug overdoses accounted for thousands of Los Angeles emergency room visits. According to the department, there were 5,382 emergency room visits and 3,048 hospitalizations for prescription drug overdose in 2009.
