Disparities in life expectancy are present in every community, representing unequal access to resources and services that can promote mental and physical health such as high quality education and healthcare services. To address these disparities, communities are forming partnerships with schools to improve educational outcomes. As poor academic outcomes are often rooted in health issues, partnerships with health organizations are of primary interest. A report by the National League of Cities, Advancing Education and Health through the Community Schools Strategy, describes how mayors and city leaders can foster collaborations between school districts, health systems, public health departments, and other community partners to reduce health disparities. City-level opportunities and innovative health and education efforts are also highlighted.
