The Joint Center released the report, 5G, Smart Cities & Communities of Color, examining the impact of fifth-generation wireless technology (5G) and Smart City technology on communities of color. Over the next four years major mobile network operators will begin offering 5G in certain cities. The growth of Smart City technologies, tools that allow cities and counties to manage public services more efficiently, will be fueled by the development of 5G. The fifth generation of wireless technology will

  • Be 10 to 100 times faster than current networks
  • Potentially increase access to high-speed broadband in Black and Latino communities
  • Have the capability to reduce or expand the digital divide and other racial disparities
  • Drive innovation, local economic development, and job growth

The report also provides recommendations for elected officials to ensure equitable 5G and Smart Cities.
